Reflection
I’m reflecting a little today. I’ve drawn a time line and have marked on it the most critical and/or meaningful events of my life. It’s meant to make me aware of the past experiences that shape the person I am today. It’s quite pleasing to find that my love of mystery stems from a visit to the British Museum when I was five. And there was this taoist fellow who had a major impact on the way I see the world. And the glandular fever from which I have never fully recovered. So far it’s a little sketchy, I need to add more and get a clearer picture if the exercise is to be of any value at all. Does this count as self-analysis...? is it an indulgence...? My excuse is that I have to write a two-thousand-word reflective essay. I feel I do need an excuse to do this kind of navel-gazing.

La Travestie et Le Triomphe
What a weekend! They say never work with children or animals, never mix your drinks, never argue with an idiot etc.. Well I have another to add to the list: Never agree to be a judge in a competition in which your child is participating. That was Friday night’s entertainment and on Saturday we all had a birthday party to attend… it was just a shame that it wasn’t the same one. Three parties, three locations, all starting a 7.30 but finishing at different times… a logistical nightmare but what an excellent evening.

e-zoo is back
That was just so much easier than I was expecting given my recent experience. Creating/downloading/uploading databases, changing php configuration files, changing DNS settings etc. etc… and all within the space of an hour! She’s got her own site now instead of sharing with me. I am her host though. I have a reseller style account which means I can host up to three domains. Ask Dave might get the last one as I still have askdave.eu.

Nameservers Are Go!
It is a bad habit of mine to almost, but not quite, finish a job. And the new quirxmode site is a case in point… but I’m too excited to resist any longer. So I’ve “changed the nameserver settings"… or at least I think I have. Only time will tell. quirxmode MkII… or v2… or 2.0 is here.
About a year ago I purchased a personal licence for ExpressionEngine a new and highly flexible CMS that I’d heard about from Veerle. Veerle has a wicked blog and quite the most stunning site visually that I’ve ever come across. She has great eye for detail; everything is really well thought through and beautifully executed. I can’t pretend that mine will be as good but I do love a restyle.
One year on and I finnally got round to installing the new script but not without discovering that my host’s servers weren’t up to the job. So I’ve had to change servers as well, but it’s all been a terribly useful learning experience and I’m really glad I’ve changed over. The service is great… I haven’t noticed one spot of downtime and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this is the norm.
viva quirxmode!.... I’ve never had a blog before.

Sock Monkeys
Ok so it isn’t a monkey but it does play the double bass and this makes up for a lot. I must ask my friend whose sock rabbit this is whether she made it.
The history of the Sock Monkey is fascinating. They came in to being during the depression. Toys were hard to come by and enterprising nimble-fingered women realised they could craft a credible monkey from one pair of thread worn Rockford Red Heel socks.
In the early fifties the Nelson Knitting Company, who made the Rockford Red Heels, realised they were on to winner and fought to obtain a patent for the sock monkey. They succeeded and today every pair is accompanied by detailed instructions on how to make a monkey.

Christmas Is Here
Last night Christmas began for us. The lights were lowered in the chapel and a single voice sang out from the choir stall in a thin and tremulous soprano voice : ‘Once In Royal David’s City’. The congregation joined in and away we went… this is after all is what it’s all about. There is nothing that can hold a candle to a good choir and a willing turn out.
It has been very cold in the North-west. The frost has been so severe that children have contemplated making frost-balls. It wouldn’t surprise me if we saw snow.
